Irish Junior Science Olympiad
Two Ursuline students, Tara Lane, 5th Year and Ella Flynn, TY, have been identified by the State Examinations Commission as having achieved exceptionally high grades in their Junior Certificate Maths and Science exams. As a result of their academic achievement they have been selected to try out for the Irish Junior Science Olympiad team. The National Olympiad Competitions will be held in October and November in Dublin City University. Best of luck to both girls.
An Gaisce Hike
Well done to those students who braved the unseasonable weather last week and headed to the Slieve Bloom mountains for their Gaisce Hike. The Ursuline had record numbers of participants this year with 77 students signed up for the Presidents Award. There are six 5th Year students working towards their silver medals and they completed a three day hike covering a total of 46km. The 71 girls undertaking the bronze medal hiked over two days and trekked for 32km. It was a real chance for the students to bond and great fun was had by all despite the wet day on Saturday. Many thanks to the teachers who went with the girls, Ms. Egan, Ms. Bourke, Mr. O’Dochertaigh, Ms. Hynes, Ms. Coffey, and Ms. Spillane and also the leaders in the Birr outdoor Education Centre who are always so encouraging.
National Ploughing Championships
All four TY classes, 104 students headed to Screggan in Co. Offaly for the National Ploughing Championships. The wellies were out in force and were a vital accessory considering that Wednesday was by far the wettest day of the Ploughing. The group were undeterred by the elements and had a fantastic day visiting many stands and exhibitors, always on the look out for free stuff. The amusements proved a popular attraction and the sports section was a must see for many of the girls. In the RTÉ tent some enjoyed the fun of the photo booth and getting their own personalised copy of the RTÉ Guide with themselves on the cover. There was also the obligatory celeb spotting with Ray D’arcy, Clodagh McKenna, Paul O’Connell and Nevin Magurie among those sighted among the crowds. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the trip in spite of the soaking they got. Many thanks to the teachers who accompanied the TY’s Ms. Dwan, Ms. Purcell, Ms. Coffey and Mr. English.
Opening of the Year Mass
The Opening Mass of the year took place on Tuesday afternoon, 19th September. The whole school came together in the Cathedral of the Assumption to bless the start of the year and to reflect on the chosen theme for 2017/2018, ‘Together we make a family.’ The theme coincides with the year of the family as designated by Pope Francis. It also incorporates the idea that the school community reflects many the same things that happen in the home, laughter, support, caring, forgiveness, making memories, sharing stories and learning life lessons. Thanks to Fr. Jim Purcell who said the mass and reminded the congregation that in all relationships, family, school, club, our attitude of is of the utmost importance.
The senior football team started off this season’s campaign with a comprehensive win over local rivals Cashel Community School. The game got off to a good start with a well taken goal from Kate O Connor who also pointed later in the half. Eimear McGrath was on set piece duty scoring a significant tally of six points before half time, two from open play. Lauren Murtagh and Niamh Long combined well in midfield and both capped off the first half with scores. Lauren scored a great goal after a solo run from the half way line, while Niamh scored two impressive points. The halftime score was Ursuline 2-10 to Cashel 1-0. Cashel with the aid of the breeze in the second half, started well and had 2-2 scored within 10 minutes. However, Ursuline soon took control and Aoibhinn Fanning, impressive at centre forward, found the back of the net to kick start UCT’s second half. Ròisín Bambrick and Ciara Nyland put the game to rest as they tallied 2-1 and 2-0 respectively. Maria Connolly capped off a good UCT performance, charging all the way up the field from her corner back position to finish in style, with a goal. The final score was UCT 8-11 to Cashel 3-5.
The Ursuline will be meeting Doon and Boherbue CS, Mallow in the coming week to complete their championship group games.
