The Irish language holds a special place in UCT, and along with the excellent curricular offering, we enjoy much extra curricular activity as Gaeilge, from Seachtain na Gaeilge to debating and public speaking.
Gael Linn Debating
Each year there is a team auditioned to participate in the Gael Linn debating competitions known as Cómortas Phiarsaigh. This is an All Ireland competition which gives young people a great opportunity to debate in Irish. The skills of debating develop huge self-confidence skills as well as the Irish language. In recent years there has been great success for our school as students have reached semifinals and All Ireland finals.
Public Speaking
Each year, we enter Irish language public speaking competitions also. Last year Katie Healy was successful in reaching the semifinal with an excellent speech on the seanfhocail ‘Ní Neart go cur le ChChéile' trength in Unity.
Essay Writing
The school also takes part in the Conradh na Gaeilge essay writing competition. Last year, entries were invited on the topic of Sporting Heroes. Roisin Astwood, TY, was one of the winners of this competition in 2021 with her entry on former Cork camogie captain, Anna Geary.
