Three Ursuline teams competed in the recent Munster Cross Country held in Tramore Park, Cork City. The minors, consisting of Kate Burke, Emma Gleeson, Rachel Quinlan, Cathy Hogan, Hannah Sheehy and Robyn Foley had a great race in muddy conditions finishing in fourth place. They just missed out on the top 3 automatic places in the All Ireland team event which will be held this year in Mallusk, Co Antrim, March 11. Kate Bourke did however qualify as an individual so well done and best wishes to her as she continues to train in preparation for that event.

The junior team of Isobel Tyrrell, Emma Osborne, Kate Hayes, Marion Gillman, Emma Roche and Rebecca Mc Cabe acquitted themselves very credibly but like the minors, just failed to make the All-Ireland’s.

The Senior race was the last chance of getting a team Antrim side this year and Claire Rafter lead them out from the gun. The pace was fast, with a large number of experienced senior runners occupying the top 10 places after the first 600 metres or so. Claire settled into the top six and was followed in by Eimear Loughman and Nuala Fitzgibbon. Eimear, in her captain’s role, helped re-calculate the results along with the officials and it was with great joy that the team learned that they had qualified along with Waterpark School, Waterford and Presentation Thurles, as the three senior Munster representatives!

Well done to all students who participated and also to Mr. McDonnell and Ms. O’Sullivan for all their hard work training the athletes. Best of luck to the Senior team who head to Antrim for the All-Ireland’s on Saturday, March 11th.
