At the moment Advent prayers are taking place in preparation for Christmas, different class groups are praying through music and reflections over the intercom in the morning. The prayers focus on the messages of Jesus’ ministry and how we can prepare ourselves for his arrival by being better people.

Two Second Year class groups went on their CSPE trip to Portlaoise prison this week. Portlaoise Prison is a high security prison for adult males. There was an informative talk relating to the justice system, crime and prison life. The students will now base their Action Project for CSPE on the day trip, the project will be worth 40% of the overall grade for the CSPE paper.

This week the Concern Debating team had their second debate against Our Lady’s Secondary School, Templemore. It was a very tough debate with both teams managing to refute each other’s arguments and develop their points very strongly. The motion of the debate was; “GM foods are essential in the fight against world hunger”. The Ursuline team was opposing the motion and after a gruelling they managed to defeat the motion unanimously. The team is now busy researching the next debate about multinational companies; the debate will take place in January.

The Gael Linn musicians recorded their CD for the Gael Linn ‘Siansa’ Competition 2014 this week under the guidance of Múinteoir De Barra. The students involved were Caoimhe Maher (guitar), Sarah Quinn (fiddle), Caít Ryan (harp / voice), Muireann O’Dwyer (cello), Aoife Delargt (flute), Roisín Heenan (fiddle), Sarah Burke (bodhrán) and Laurna Ryan (concertina). The CD features seven pieces, one bodhrán solo and a voice solo; there is a mixture of reels, jigs, waltzes and slip jigs. There is also a beautiful solo of ‘Eamonn on Chnoic’ by Caít Ryan , a song which is synonymous with Caít’s Upperchurch roots! Well done to the girls and we look forward to hearing the finished product.
