HONOUR FOR THE CHAMBER CHOIR

On Saturday, November 3, the Chamber Choir travelled to Mary Immaculate College, Limerick to perform in the Royal Irish Academy’s High Achievers’ Concert. Following an impressive performance at this concert the choir has been selected to perform at the RIAM National Concert. This is a tremendous honour for the choir who also took part in the All Island Choir Competition recently. The concert will take place in Dublin at the end of December. Congratulations to Ms Farrell and the choir on this wonderful achievement.

TRANSITION YEAR

GARDA SAFETY WORKSHOP

The Transition Year students participated in a Garda workshop this week that emphasised the issue of road safety. The girls had the opportunity to sit in a simulator that recreated the sensations of being upside-down in a car crash, they also learned about the reality of being cut out of a car following a car accident. It was a very important workshop which highlighted the need for safety in cars and on the road. The students received hi-visibility vests and arm-bands when leaving the workshop, and they also got to meet some impressive Garda dogs. Many thanks to Thurles Garda station for facilitating this workshop.

MIDLANDS SENIOR BASKETBALL B FINAL

The Senior Basketball team played in the Midlands Senior Basketball B final this week in Portlaoise. The Ursuline girls took on Scoil Chriost Rí in Portlaoise on Wednesday, November 27. The Ursuline girls started off well with great strength in defence allowing the team to go 2 points ahead by the time the half-time whistle blew. Unfortunately the second half didn’t go to plan; a strong Portlaoise side capitalised on every opportunity and punished the Ursuline team on free throws. The girls battled fiercely until the final whistle but alas the victory was not to belong to the Ursuline and the Portlaoise girls won 25 points to 18. Well done to the team for their valiant efforts and also to the supporters who went to support the team.

HOCKEY

It was again a very week for the hockey teams, as Villiers came to Thurles to play five matches. The Ursuline Senior B took on their Villiers counterparts in the first match. They played a very strong match, winning 2-0. The Junior B2 also faced Villiers and gave a similarly impressive performance, taking victory 3-0. On the same day the Second Year B1 team also defeated Villiers 4-0.

The Senior A team also played Villiers , again they played a very impressive game and finished on a 3-0 score line with victory falling to the Ursuline girls. The Junior A team played a very close match against Villiers but grasped victory in a 3-2 finish.

On Friday last, three Ursuline teams travelled to Laurel Hill Secondary School in Limerick. The Second Year A team played a magnificent game and finished with a 7-0 victory. Meanwhile the Second Year B3 battled bravely against their Laurel Hill adversaries and finished with a draw match, 1-1. Finally, the First Year Red team took on their match with gusto, winning 7-0. It certainly was a most impressive match for girls who only started playing hockey in September; it looks like this First year group is brimming with talent. Well done girls!
