Ursuline Jersey Day in aid of SVP
On Friday, 12 September the staff and students of the Ursuline Secondary School held a jersey day in aid of Saint Vincent de Paul. The rainbow of Ireland, county and club colours on the corridors was a feast to the eye of all sports lovers. Many thanks to Ms Molony and the Sixth Year students on Charities Committee who organised this fundraiser for a very worthy cause. Thanks to all who contributed, raising €1,500, to help those in poverty in Thurles and its surrounding areas.
Sixth Year Geography Trip
The annual Geography trip to Clare for the Ursuline Sixth Years took place last week when they headed off for an overnight on Wednesday, 10 September. They braved the unsettled conditions of the west to complete their Field Trip Study Report. Investigations of coastal erosion were conducted, in particular the girls studied its effect on the sea battered cliffs of Co Clare and the impressive wave cut platforms in this part of the country. They got to see the protective coastal measures in place in Lahinch and the spectacular natural beauty of the Cliffs of Moher. Other highlights of the excursion included Poulnabrone Dolmen and Ailwee Caves. Thanks to Leaving Cert Geography teachers Ms Hearne and Ms Tuohy for organising this important and memorable geographical outing.
Gaisce Adventure Hike
The annual Ursuline Gaisce adventure hike happened between Thursday 11 and Saturday 13 September with over 80 students involved over the three days. Thanks to Ms Egan and Ms Bourke who accompanied the girls on this important element of their bronze medal Gaisce Award. They had great fun trekking in the Slieve Bloom Mountains with lots of chatter, plenty of mutual encouragement and a bit of singing in the rain. Two very committed Fifth Year students, Cailín Tierney and Grace Eiffe, completed a 50km walk over three days in order to fulfil their silver medal requirements. The Birr Adventure Centre were as welcoming and accommodating as ever and thanks to their guides who looked after the girls on the hikes.
Equestrian
Congratulations to Ursuline TY student Evie Kennedy and her pony Phoenix who finished in second place overall at the Defender Burghley Horse Trials in the UK recently. She was in the lead after dressage and working hunter and showed incredible skill in the show jumping competition to secure a championship silver medal placing in this international equestrian event. A fantastic achievement.
Gaelic Football
Well done to the Second and First Year footballers from UCT who took part in the Tipperary Schools Blitz in Borrisoleigh last week. The Ursuline entered four teams, such is the interest and enthusiasm for LGFA in the school. The teams were jointly captained by Heather Carrignan, Lara Nugent, Zoe Nash, Emma Griffin, Caoimhe Heaney, Holly McNamara, Kate Duffy and Lucy Ely. The players really enjoyed their day out and got in some valuable game time before the Munster Championship begins.
