Soccer

Congratulations to Ursuline’s Grace Fitzpatrick Ryan, TY, who recently represented Ireland in U16 Soccer against Northern Ireland. Well done Grace who also played with the Senior Ursuline Gaelic Footballers last week helping them to victory against Templemore on Monday, 1 November.

TY Hairdressing Workshop

The TY classes enjoyed the ‘Rootine’ hairdressing workshop last week with Ann O’Reilly. Thestudents each got a training head to work on so they could practice up-dos, braiding, knots, twistsand chignons. They learned hair care techniques and the best, easiest ways to look after their tresses. This workshop is always good fun, practical and the TYs certainly likedall the hands on tips they got from Ann.

Well done to the Ursuline Junior 7s Camogie team who represented Munster in the All-Ireland Camogie 7s on Wednesday 3 November in the Meath GAA Centre of Excellence. They played group games against the provincial winners from Ulster, Connaught and Leinster. The first encounter of the day saw them up against tough opponents, Loreto Kilkenny, the eventual outright winners. The final score was Ursuline 4-4 Loreto Kilkenny 8-4. Ursuline and Loreto would meet again at the end of the day to do battle in the final.

Next up the Thurles side faced the Ulster Champions, St Killians from Ballymena. This was a hard fought game between two very evenly matched competitors but Ursuline emerged on top a goal ahead at the final whistle with 2-3 to St Killians 1-3. It was Presentation Athenry from Connaught who lined out against Thurles in their third match of the day. This proved to be another battle of wills with UCT securing their place in the final with an 8-3 to 6-2 win against Pres Athenry. This meant the All-Ireland final was a repeat of the opening match against Loreto. Ursuline kept the Leinster side within reach for most of the game and at half-time it was still there for the taking with Ursuline 2-4 to Loreto 2-7. However, Loreto pulled away in the final ten minutes to take a decisive victory. Well done to the team who played their hearts out throughout the day to do the School and themselves proud.

The Senior A Camogie team played their first game of the Munster Championship last week taking on Greenhills from Carrick-on-Suir and winning by three goals. The final result was UCT 5-9 Carrick 2-9.

Senior Football Munster Championship

Ursuline Senior footballers got their Munster Campaign off to a great start on Monday 1 Nov whenthey defeated Our Lady’s Templemore. Michelle Flanagan got the team off on the right footing when she found the back of the net within the opening minutes. Jess Gleeson added to that tally by scoring 1-1 shortly after.Templemore got back into the game and scored a few well taken points. Joint Captains Cathy Hogan and AnnaDerby worked tirelessly up and down the field to halt Templemoreattacks. The game was an even enough contest and both teams traded scores with MichelleFlanagan and Kate Burke both pointing and Robyn Fanning raising the green flag for the Ursuline before half time. At the break the score was Ursuline Thurles 3-3 Templemore 1-6.

Starting back both teams grabbed a point each early on with Michelle Flanagan finding the uprights for UCT. Then Rachel Quinlan got a second goal for Thurles them six points ahead. Templemore were stilldangerous in attack but the Ursuline backs held out well and Muireann Treacy in goal saved numerousshots. The half-back and full back line put in great effort and Lorna Ryan in particular was outstanding blockingshots and setting up attacks. The Seniors rounded off a great performance with Grainne O Donnell and KatieO’Dwyer getting a point each while Grace Fitzpatrick Ryan got a final goal to leave the score board reading 5-6 to 1-8 in favour of the Ursuline at the finalwhistle. This win means that the Seniors are through to the last sixteen in Munster.

Hockey

There was plenty of Hockey action both at home and away last week. The Junior As and Senior As played League matches away to Laurel Hill Coláiste on Wednesday, 3 November with strong wins for both sides. The Juniors beat Laurel Hill 5-0 while the Seniors got a hat-trick of goals to win 3-0. The Juniors were excellent in attack while the backs defended bravely throughout to ensure a clean sheet. The goal scorers were Miah Bourke (2), Aoife Kavanagh (2) and Beth Ann Murphy. The Senior As produced their best performance of the season to see off a very fast and dogged challenge from Laurel Hill Coláiste. They went three goals ahead in the first half with a stroke from Kate Ryan and two well taken shots in each quarter from Rosie Farrell who was superb from the get go. Yvette D’arcy made two spectacular blocks in both the first and third quarters. The defence were solid throughout and there was some brilliant link up play on show between the mids and forwards which culminated in plenty of goal chances overall.

The Minor B and C teams played their counterparts from Villiers at home on Thursday, 4 November. The Minor Bs are making good progress and played some lovely hockey. Their game ended in a two goal win for the Limerick side. The Minor Cs took on Villiers second team. They did a great job putting all their skills into play as well as showing grit and determination to win by a goal, 1-0.

The First Years also played Villiers on Thursday last and a super goal from Kate Kenny meant they saw off the challenge of the Shannonsiders.

Fifth Year Ag Science Trip

The Fifth Year Ag Science students and their teacher Mr O’Heney took a trip to Michael Ryan’s dairy farm in Cashel on Tuesday, 2 November. It was a fantastic opportunity to see first-hand how the theory they have been learning in class is put into action on a working farm. They learned more about grass, genetics and good environmental practices. Special thanks to local Teagasc advisor Sandra Hayes for facilitating the visit and to Michael for allowing students access to his farm and his patience in explaining his work to the class.
