Fifth Year Biology Trip

The Ursuline Fifth Year Biology classes enjoyed a trip to Castlecomer Discovery Park on Thursday, 16 May. They undertook important field work, studying native plant and insect life as part of their Ecology section on the Leaving Cert course.

Munster Athletics Track and Field

Congratulations to the Ursuline athletes who took part in the Munster Track and Field in MTU, Cork on Saturday, 17 May.

Eleanor Kiernan smashed the mile record by three seconds to win the under U16 competition. Caoimhe Slevin ran a stunning 5.12 in the Junior 1500m. Gráinne Daly jumped 1m35 in the Minor high jump. Grace Fennelly ran just over 2 minutes 30 seconds in the Minor 800m and Órla Pamplin completed the half mile in 2 minutes 24. Lorna Ryan finished in sixth place in the Intermediate discus and Alana Spillane ran the 3k in 10 minutes 36. Rachel Dowd finished fifth in the 200m.

This was the Ursuline’s largest team for a number of years and thanks to all for competing and to the parents who brought them to the competition.

UCT contest Munster U14.5 Football Final

The Ursuline U14.5 footballers had a great battle with Loreto Clonmel on Tuesday, 13 May in the Munster A Final. The UCT girls gave it everything but Loreto Clonmel proved too strong in the end with the South Tipp School lifting the trophy. It’s been a fantastic year for football in the school across all ages and this U14.5 group worked and trained hard to get to a Munster A Final and gave a display of exceptional football on the day. Credit to Loreto Clonmel on an excellent performance in the final.

Both schools also competed in last years Minor A Final and this years Junior A final so it looks like the future of LGFA is bright for the county.

Issy Carr plays for Tipperary Senior Football Team

A huge well done to Ursuline Sixth Year student Issy Carr, who made her Senior Championship debut for Tipperary last weekend in their thrilling draw with Kerry. A fierce competitor every time she puts on a jersey, Issy earned her call up on the back of phenomenal form for her school, her club Holycross-Ballycahill, and underage county teams over the past few years. Everyone in UCT wishes her well playing in the blue and gold and may she enjoy many more days togging out for Tipperary Seniors.

Hockey

Well Done to the Ursuline Greens and hard luck to the Reds on Monday, 12 May as they played each other in the Minor C League Final. This is the fourth year in a row that Ursuline Thurles have won this competition. It was so good to witness such brilliant hockey being played by two very skilful teams in the wonderful sunshine. The game was a good spirited one with only a small bit of rivalry. Thanks to both Captains, Róisín O’Reilly for the winning Greens and Clodagh McLoughney for the Reds, ever gracious in defeat. Both Róisín and Clodagh have worked tirelessly all year in motivating, organising and mentoring their players. It’s a testament to both of them that the teams have improved so much this season. Well done both Greens and Reds on reaching a Munster Hockey Final. Although someone has to lift the silverware at the end of the hour everyone of the players who lined out to represent UCT against their friends and peers is a winner for giving time, commitment and effort throughout the year.

Munster Hockey

Well done to Sarah Spain, Leah O’ Connell, Gabrielle Morrissey, Máire Kearney, Éadaoin Carroll and Aoife Fanning who were selected to play in the U15 National Festival with the Munster Academy. The girls had competitive games against Connacht, Ulster, Leinster and Leinster South on Sunday, 18 May in Three Rock Rovers Hockey Club in Dublin.

TY

Ursuline TYs had another busy week. On Friday, 9 May they had a trip to Emerald Park and then went bowling later on in the evening. Last week they had a bun decorating workshop with Maria Cahill from The Artful Caker. Their icing toppings had distinctly summer vibes with sand, ice-cream and sunglass wearing crabs on beach towels.

Towards the end of last week the four TY classes had a Segway workshop and were seen zipping around the grounds on two wheels. They finish their TY programme on Monday, 19 May with their display night for parents, showcasing all they have accomplished both inside and outside the classroom this year.

Darkness into Light

Thanks to the Ursuline students and staff who got out bed extra early to sing the walkers and runners across the finish line of the annual Darkness into Light 5k for Pieta House. They provided great atmosphere and a lift to all those taking part in Thurles.
