The BT Young Scientist team of Kate Carr, Rachel Regan and Hannah O’Mahoney represented the School and themselves with pride last week in the BT Young Science and Technology Exhibition. The TY trio impressed the judges with their investigation into the effects of prolonged mask-wearing on various groups. Their research was conducted on toddlers, adolescents and the hearing impaired. They did studies on how easily these groups can interpret human emotions and expressions now that people are wearing masks inside on an almost continual basis, in school and in the workplace. Their project, falling under the Social Science category, is certainly very relevant and no doubt the beginning of many studies that will be done on the short term and long term effects of mask wearing. Kate, Hannah and Rachel put enormous work into their stand and their virtual presentation so well done to them. A big thank you to Mr O’Heney who guided them in their scientific investigations and to Ms Tuohy who helped out in a big way with the technological end of things.

Senior A Camogie Semi Final

Well done to the Ursuline Senior Camogie team who reached the Munster Senior A Camogie Semi-Final. They played near neighbours Cashel Community School in a tough contest in Cashel. The final score of UCT 0-10 to Cashel Community School 1-12 saw Cashel take the coveted Munster Final spot. This was the last Munster Championship outing for the Ursuline’s Sixth Years who have given great service to Camogie in the School over the years. The best of luck to Cashel in the Munster Final who will play either Coachford or St Mary’s Midleton in the Final.

Ladies Gaelic Football

Congratulations to both Junior Football Teams who last week played decisive games in the Munster Schools Championship. The Junior 1 team secured their place in the Munster Semi Final with victory over Kerry side Sliabh Luchra. Goal scorers in this decider came from Ciara Fitzpatrick, Anna O’Donoghue, Sarah Quinlan and Alice O’Donoghue. The Junior 2 team were in Quarter Final action against Loreto Clonmel in a tense game that saw the Ursuline pull away in extra time.

County U16 and U14 Football Panels

Well done to the Ursuline students who made the U16 County panel Grace Fitzpatrick Ryan, Ciara Fitzpatrick, Evie Smyth and Paula Quirke. The Ursuline is represented on the County U14 Football panel by Amy O’Connor and Louise McGrath. Best of luck to all in training for the season ahead.

Hockey fixtures continued last week across all grades. In the Senior A League Semi-Final the Ursuline lost out to Scoil Mhuire. The Junior As were on form and beat Scoil Mhuire 4-1. The Junior Cs played their first Cup game against Laurel Hill Coláiste. It was a close battle and the game was 0-0 heading into the last quarter due in part to some excellent goal-keeping from Freya Fitzgerald. Tireless work from Izzy Carr, Isobel Hourigan and Naoise Quinlivan ensured the game went down to the wire. In the end Laurel Hill Coláiste just edged UCT out with a 2-0 win.

The Ursuline Cadettes travelled to Dublin last week to play Mount Anvil in the All-Ireland Basketball Play-Offs. Well done to the team on getting this far in the competition. Even though the result was not what they wanted they still showed their mettle and why they deserved to be there with moments of great play. Also they really enjoyed the day out representing the School on the courts.

Europe Direct Soapbox Public Speaking Competition

Ursuline students, Anna O’Brien, TY and Kaja Gorwa, Sixth Year, won both the Junior and Senior Categories respectively of the Europe Direct Soapbox Regional Finals. The students spoke about information and misinformation in the Public Speaking Competition organised by Portlaoise Library and seven other regional Libraries around the country. Thanks to Aoife Moore, from Portlaoise Library who came to the School last Friday, 14 January to present the students with their prize of an IPad each, which they were thrilled about. Aoife told Public Speaking teacher Ms Quinn and Kaja the judges were impressed with the high standard of speeches from all entrants and so Anna and Kaja were well deserved winners.
