Think Languages Day

Well done to the MFL Department of the Ursuline on another successful Think Languages Day on Friday, 21 November. The TY classes had a full itinerary of cultural activities including belly dancing while learning Arabic words, flamenco moves and Spanish phrases, Polish and Sign Language classes hosted by some of our bi-lingual students, Taekwondo, Chinese lettering and a ‘Around the World in 80 Trays’ baking competition. Great fun and great exposure to other languages and other traditions.

Chess Club

Ursuline Chess Club made a welcome return last week and there were a few new members to add to this growing lunchtime activity. There will be a school league in the Spring time so until then students can get into the intricacies of the game, learn new tactics or start from the very beginning with social games.

Hockey

The Senior A Hockey team had a tough game against Mount Mercy on Wednesday, 19 November. The final score was UCT 1 Mount Mercy 2. Despite the result there was plenty of positive play from the Ursuline girls with strong performances across the pitch. Next up in the Munster League is an away game to St Angela’s, Cork.

Congratulations to the Ursuline Minor C2 Hockey team who got their league off to a flying start last week with a win over Gael Choláiste Luimnigh. Goal scorers for UCT were Aoife Nangle, Patrice Quirke, Robyn O’Brien and Mary Beth Ryan. Emma O’Brien distributed the ball well from the midline to open up play for the forwards, giving ample scoring opportunities.

Ursuline team with TG4 Slé Quiz

Three Ursuline TYs, Ruth O Connell, Aishlinn Smee and Isobel Ralph won the TG4 Slé Quiz Show last week. The trio qualified for the TV quiz by first preparing a video about themselves in Irish which they submitted to the producers. Next up they were selected for a Zoom interview and a trialquiz. Following on from this they were picked to take part in the live recording which took place in the TG4 studio in Dublin last week, on Tuesday, 18 November. They were up against a boy's school from Monaghan. The UCT girls were neck and neck all the way through the four opening rounds. In the final round, the quick-fire round, they pulled away to takethe lead, getting only one rapid fire question wrong. They were outright winners of Slé, with each girl receiving a150 voucher, along with hoodies and a gift bag. This programme will be aired next year so watch this space!!! A wonderful experience and a great achievement for Isobel, Aishlinn and Ruth and their Irish teacher, Ms de Barra.

LGFA

The Ursuline Senior A footballers are into a Munster Quarter Final. They played the last of their group games against Spanish Point in Limerick last week. The final score was UCT 2-11 to 6-5 St Joseph’s Secondary School, Spanish Point. There was great play from both sides and the Ursuline now look forward to progressing to the next stages of the Championship.

The First Year footballers were in action against St Mary’s Nenagh, co-captained by Bríd Quinn and Kate Gaule. It was a great opportunity for them to practice playing as a team so many thanks to Nenagh for the challenge.

TYs

The Ursuline TYs had an Archery Workshop on Wednesday, 19 November with Black Castle Archers based in Thurles. Over the course of five weeks a different TY group will get the chance to learn some bow and arrow skills and see how well they can master this medieval sport.

The LawEd workshops with past Ursuline pupil Kate Hediganbegan last week. Each of the five TY classes will participate in this very informative and interesting workshop. Kate takes them through the legal system as it relates to them. They will learn about their legal rights and obligations as employees and also find out what happens if, under the age of 18, they end up on the wrong side of the law. Giving examples of famous criminal and civil cases the students get a great understanding of Irish jurisprudence and the mock trials, which form the afternoon leg of the workshop, are a are real eye-opener into how a court case is conducted.

Camogie

The Ursuline Junior A Development Camogie team played their last group game on Tuesday, 18 November against Coláiste Mhuire Ennis. The venue for the game was UL and their win here sees them into a Munster Final to be played against St Mary’s Nenagh.

The First Year Camogie players had a challenge game against St Mary’s Nenagh on Thursday, 20 November. It was a great chance for them to don the UCT jersey and play for the love of the game.
