Basketball
Ursuline First and Second Year Basketball teams were out in force this week with games against Ballingarry and CTI Clonmel. In the Ballingarry games both First and Second Year teams secured wins. The First Years fought hard to win their match 14-8. The Second Years finished 18-10 after a tough physical encounter with a very determined Ballingarry. Both of these teams have now progressed onto the quarter-final stage. Well done and best of luck to them in the rest of the league.
The other First and Second Year Basketball teams played games against CTI Clonmel on Thursday, 6 February. Unfortunately for the UCT girls Clonmel proved too strong on this occasion and pocketed the points from both games. But the players had fun and got great game time that will stand them well in future on court competitions.
Ursuline Fifth Year History students go to see Heroes and Ghosts
Fifth Year History students from the Ursuline and some of the International students were delighted to be able to attend Christy Clancy’s one man dramatisation of the life of Tipperary man Larry Slattery in Horse and Jockey’s Derrynaflan Theatre on Friday, 7 February. Christy’s play is based on the fascinating true story of World War Two’s longest serving prisoner of war, Larry Slattery, an RAF gunner from Tipperary, who survived the ill-fated Battle of Wilhelmshaven on 4 September, 1939, the day after Britain declared war on Nazi Germany. He spent five years and eight months in German POW camps in Germany and Poland. After the war he worked as an interpreter in Germany at the Nuremberg War Crime trials, played violin in the London Philharmonic Orchestra and worked with Labour MP Tony Benn when he was Minister for Technology. Christy brought the real Larry Slattery to life on the stage and in doing so enthralled the young audience who got a rare glimpse into how ordinary service personnel, like Larry, survived in the war time camps, the harshness and cruelty they endured and the effect their war time experiences had on them.

It was a busy week in the Ursuline in terms of Public Speaking and Debating recently. Congratulations to TYs Isabelle O’Connor, Ava Scally, Anna Maxwell, Chloe Cahill, Leah Banaghan and Libby Corcoran who formed two public speaking teams for the Knights of St Columbanus Public Speaking Competition. Ursuline Fifth Years and TYs, on this year’s Concern Debate team, had a fifth round debate last week against St Joseph’s Community College, Kilkee. Rosie Bradish, (Captain), CáitBrowne, Ruth Maher and Lily Murphy opposed the motion ‘We must only buy from brands that adopt fair trade practices.’ The School is awaiting results to find out if they have made it through to the sixth round of this all Ireland competition.
