On Thursday last, May 3, the Chamber Choir headed for the Cork International Choral Festival in defence of its winning title in 2011. It was always going to be a difficult task with a total entry in the Secondary School’s Competition of twenty one Choirs.
The competition was divided into three sections of seven choirs each: early morning, late morning and afternoon. Each choir had to sing two contrasting songs and the Chamber Choir fulfilled that brief with the slow, haunting piece Suantraí ár Slánaitheora by Fintan O’Carroll and the more vivacious, dramatic and technically challenging Roll Jordan Roll – a traditional air arranged by Brian Tate.
As expected, the standard was amazingly high and the Chamber Choir performed flawlessly. When the announcement of the prize winners was made the Chamber Choir was announced as joint second with a mark of 88.7. The winning Choir came from Ballphehane , Cork with 91 marks.
Young Social Innovators
The two YSI groups of Transition Year students are putting the final touches to their projects which qualified for the National Finals on Thursday next. “Let them be Young” is a very topical and relevant subject in today’s world. The students have prepared a booklet and developed a website on suggestions for age appropriate pastimes, forms of dress etc. The second group is promoting Tipperary as a source of many excellent food products.
